Our Jazz Brunch Cruise is back with an extended schedule! We’ll be cruising Saturday and Sunday all summer long.
Originally from Canada, Dave was raised in Hawaii and Southern California. He saved all the money from his first paper route, and bought a trombone. The rest was history.
He took lessons from legendary Louis Armstrong trombonist Trummy Young. At Hawaii’s Kalaheo Intermediate School, he won several band awards and earned a two-year scholarship with the Honolulu Symphony.
At Kailua High School, Dave learned from former Stan Kenton trumpeter Norman Baltazar. He then studied with friend, mentor and legendary Trombonist Bill Watrous (Watrous can be heard on Dave’s latest CD “One Big Beautiful World,” which picked up a nomination for Best Jazz Album at the 2018 San Diego Music Awards).
In addition to his passion for trombone, Dave started studying at the National Weather Service and landed his first on-air position with KYMA-TV in Yuma, Arizona as weekday weatherman.
He returned to San Diego as the weekend weather anchor for KUSI-TV, and zeroed in on his career. Dave now holds a Bachelors in Meteorology from MSU, and a Seal of Approval in Broadcast Meteorology from the American Meteorological Society. He was even an inductee into the NATAS Silver Circle.
As an accomplished jazz trombonist and composer, Dave has been the featured soloist at numerous concerts including the San Diego Chamber Orchestra with Jung-Ho Pak and the San Diego Youth Symphony.
Recently, Dave played in the trombone section of the San Diego Symphony Pops backing American Songbook Legend Michael Feinstein, and as a guest performer with the Tifereth Israel Orchestra featuring his original compositions arranged and orchestrated by Latin Jazz great Irving Flores.
He has also had the chance to sing and share some unique musical moments with the likes of Steve Allen, Robert Goulet, Mel Torme, Bill Watrous, Toni Tenille, Ed McMahon, Jimmy Buffet, Carol Channing and even Wayne Newton and CNN’s Larry King. His compositions have been featured on radio and television including KSDS Jazz 88, KUSI, with KYXY’s Jeff and Jer, and KIFM’s Morning Drive Show.
